You think you are in control..?
Join us to explore what happens when your personalities go to war
This innovative production blends psychology, humour, and drama to explore how we navigate our inner voices through order and chaos, and find our true selves.
A psychological drama exploring the hidden mechanics of the mind
UNCONSCIOUS takes audiences inside the head of Sophia, a tech entrepreneur whose life appears successful but feels increasingly hollow. The play uses a split-stage design where we see both Sophia’s external world and her internal ‘control room’, staffed by the NUMINA, a team of characters representing different aspects of her psyche.
As Sophia navigates a crucial business deal that could make or break her company, we witness the constant negotiations, conflicts and power struggles happening inside her mind. TIW (order and control) battles with ERIS (chaos and creativity) for influence, while other team members – representing wisdom, life force, risk-taking and worldview – contribute their voices to every decision.
The central tension emerges from a childhood trauma that remains unresolved, represented by WHITE, a child-like figure confined to a cage within the control room. As Sophia’s carefully constructed world begins to unravel, the NUMINA team fractures, leading to a reckoning with long-buried truths.
Style and Approach
The play blends scenes from Sophia’s daily life with the more stylised world of the NUMINA control room. Actors playing the NUMINA take on multiple roles as the various people Sophia encounters – colleagues, investors, family members – reinforcing the idea that we populate our external world with projections from our internal landscape.
The play demands precision from the ensemble as the NUMINA must work as a cohesive unit whilst maintaining distinct individual characteristics. Physical theatre elements support the psychological storytelling, particularly in showing how internal states manifest in the body.
Themes
The play examines how childhood experiences shape adult behaviour, the cost of living according to others’ expectations rather than authentic desires, and the possibility of breaking free from internalised patterns of control and self-sabotage.
Content Note
The play deals with themes of childhood trauma, mental health struggles, and includes depictions of emotional abuse. But not too much!
The film
We’re planning to make a film of the play. Not just a recording of the play but a standalone, edited production which will be filmed towards the end of the rehearsal process.
Suitable for actors interested in:
* Ensemble-based theatre
* Psychological complexity
* Physical theatre elements
* Development of a brand new story
* Playing multiple characters within a single role

Character Summary – more details below
Sophia’s our lead and definitely has main character energy, except that she may not actually be real. Either way, she’s the battleground.
SOPHIA (Female, 25-30) – Outwardly successful but inwardly struggling tech entrepreneur. Stern, demanding, and hardworking, she projects confidence while battling imposter syndrome. Like most people, she has an interior monologue that shifts and changes, but here we get to see this in action as she becomes the ground over which the various aspects of her personality fight. We need an actor who can show those shifts as her life gets turned upside down.
Then the Numina, the personalities inside of Sophia.
TIW (Male, 40-65) – Representing order, stability, and control. Rigid, authoritarian, and resistant to change, he’s the self-appointed team leader who demands absolute compliance.
ERIS (Female, 18-30) – Representing chaos, creativity, and change. A newcomer to the team, not stuck in their ways. Playful, disruptive, and insightful, she challenges the status quo.
BRIGID (Female, 20-40) – Representing creative chaos, previously evicted by Tiw. Calmer and more tolerant than Eris. Appears in flashback. Requires warmth and quiet strength. (Minor role).
LILITH (Female, 30-40) – Representing strength, determination, and life force. Powerful, sensual, and protective. She can sometimes overpower the others with her force of will. Requires physicality and commanding presence.
TYCHE (Female, 20-45) – Representing risk-taking and dopamine-seeking behaviour. A compulsive gambler who seeks thrills regardless of consequences, energetic and playful.
ULLR (Male, 25-55) – Representing worldview and judgment. Self-righteous, superior, and judgmental. Requires an actor who can portray both intellectual arrogance and eventual humility.
OGHMA (Female, 40-65) – Representing practical knowledge and experience. Aloof, superior, and preachy, but capable of quick thinking.
VÖR (Female, 40-60) – The all-knowing observer who oversees the inner team. Quietly authoritative with a hint of weariness. Often sings to herself.
WHITE (Female, appears 10-11) – The personification of Sophia’s childhood trauma, stuck at the age when the trauma occurred, though with a fun pre-trauma scene. Vulnerable, frightened, and ignored by the others.
Note: Most roles require actors who can play multiple characters, as the NUMINA also appear in the real world as different people Sophia interacts with. Strong ensemble skills and the ability to make quick character transitions are essential.
Characters in more detail and audition pieces
SOPHIA in more detail
Sophia presents herself as the embodiment of tech success – driven, disciplined, and determined. She’s built a biotech startup that promises guilt-free junk food by matching people’s DNA to optimal food choices. However, beneath this polished exterior lies profound inner conflict. Sophia’s childhood creativity was systematically suppressed by parents and tutors who pushed her toward ‘practical’ subjects, leaving her trapped on a path she never consciously chose. She overcompensates with rigid control, perfectionism, and workaholism.
Throughout the play, Sophia experiences moments of dissociation as her inner NUMINA battle for control. The actor must convey both the outward confidence that impresses investors and the internal fracturing that threatens to unravel her life. Sophia’s journey is one of reconnection – finding her authentic creativity and voice despite external pressures and expectations. The transformation should feel earned rather than sudden, with glimpses of her true self breaking through the cracks of her constructed persona even in early scenes.
Here are the pieces for the audition:
TIW in more detail
Tiw rules Sophia’s inner world like a military commander, believing absolute order and control are essential for survival. He represents Sophia’s most rigid self-discipline. His primary motivation is stability and safety – keeping Sophia on a structured path that promises security through achievement and social acceptance. He genuinely believes that without his strict management, Sophia would fall into chaos and end up living under a bridge.
Tiw’s character is defined by fear disguised as strength. He despises uncertainty and spontaneity, which makes Eris his natural antagonist. His leadership style is authoritarian, brooking no dissent and punishing creativity that doesn’t serve his goals. The actor must convey both Tiw’s intimidating command presence and the deep insecurity that fuels his controlling behaviour. As the play progresses, Tiw becomes increasingly desperate as his influence wanes, revealing the frightened, inflexible core beneath his commanding exterior. There should be moments where we glimpse his genuine concern for Sophia’s wellbeing, however misguided his methods.
Here are the pieces for the audition:
ERIS in more detail
Eris arrives as a new team member in Sophia’s mindscape, bringing disruptive energy to the stagnant NUMINA. She embodies creative chaos and transformation rather than destructive disorder. Eris intuitively understands what Sophia truly needs – the courage to break free from others’ expectations.
Eris operates on intuition rather than reason, experiencing life through moment-to-moment ‘glimmers’ of feeling and curiosity. Her apparent recklessness masks a deeper wisdom about what makes life meaningful. She delights in challenging rules and assumptions, particularly Tiw’s rigid control.
Her chaos isn’t random but purposeful, aimed at breaking calcified patterns. She should feel unpredictable yet deeply principled in her own way. Eris’s external manifestations (as a psychologist, barista, tycoon, PR agent and chat show host) should maintain her essential qualities while adapting to each context.
Here are the pieces for the audition:
BRIGID in more detail
Brigid was Sophia’s original creative force before being ‘evicted’ during Sophia’s childhood. More measured and gentle than her replacement Eris, Brigid represents the natural, nurturing creativity that was part of Sophia’s authentic self before suppression. Where Eris is disruptive, Brigid was integrative – helping Sophia find joy and meaning through artistic expression.
The actor should portray Brigid with a warm, grounded quality that contrasts with both Tiw’s rigidity and Eris’s wildness. Though she appears only in flashback, her presence should feel significant – a glimpse of what Sophia lost and might reclaim. Note that this is a minor role.
Here is the piece for the audition:
LILITH in more detail
Lilith represents Sophia’s deepest life force – her will to survive, sexual energy, and raw determination. Lilith embodies power that cannot be fully contained or controlled. She’s the most physically present of the NUMINA, often expressing herself through the body rather than the mind.
Lilith’s loyalty shifts throughout the play based on what she intuitively feels will strengthen Sophia. Though initially aligned with Tiw’s regime, she becomes increasingly drawn to Eris’s vision as she recognizes that true strength comes from authenticity rather than control. The actor must convey Lilith’s formidable presence and the sensual, primal quality that makes her both dangerous and essential. When Lilith speaks, the other NUMINA listen, even if they disagree.
Here are the pieces for the audition:
TYCHE in more detail
Tyche represents Sophia’s risk-taking impulses and desire for dopamine-driven excitement. A compulsive gambler both literally and metaphorically, she’s constantly seeking the next thrill or rush. While this makes her impulsive and sometimes irresponsible, it also gives her access to joy and spontaneity that others lack.
The actor playing Tyche should bring energy and infectious enthusiasm, creating a character who lives perpetually in the moment. Tyche doesn’t plan or strategise – she acts on impulse and deals with consequences later. Despite her apparent frivolity, Tyche occasionally delivers surprising wisdom from her unique perspective of embracing chance. The role requires physical comedy skills and the ability to shift emotional states rapidly.
Here are the pieces for the audition:
ULLR in more detail
Ullr holds Sophia’s worldview and judgment systems, constantly assessing situations and people based on internalised values and beliefs. He represents the lens through which Sophia interprets her experiences. Highly opinionated and somewhat rigid, Ullr believes his judgments are always correct and superior to others’.
He’s constantly taking mental notes, evaluating everything against his internal checklist of what’s acceptable or valuable. His movements are controlled and deliberate, his speech pattern more formal than the others. Ullr gradually realises the limitations of his perspective as Eris challenges him to question inherited values that don’t serve Sophia’s authentic needs.
Here are the pieces for the audition:
OGHMA in more detail
Oghma embodies Sophia’s accumulated practical knowledge and received wisdom. She represents everything Sophia has learned from education, experience, and authority figures. Somewhat aloof and superior, Oghma believes deeply in conventional paths to success and security.
The actor should portray Oghma with a teacher’s authoritative presence – she knows what she knows and expects others to defer to her expertise. As the play progresses, Oghma struggles with emerging evidence that contradicts her established knowledge, creating moments of genuine confusion and vulnerability beneath her confident exterior before she accepts this new knowledge as wisdom.
Here are the pieces for the audition:
VÖR in more detail
Vör represents the all-knowing witness aspect of consciousness, observing more than participating, maintaining connection to something beyond the immediate struggles of the team. She often hums or sings to herself, seemingly detached yet subtly influencing key moments.
Her physical presence should be grounded and calm amid the chaos. Though apparently neutral for much of the play, Vör eventually facilitates the transformation of the NUMINA team structure, revealing her quiet power. She should feel ancient compared to the other aspects, carrying weight and perspective that transcends immediate concerns.
Here are the pieces for the audition:
WHITE in more detail
White represents Sophia’s childhood trauma, frozen at the age when pivotal experiences altered her development. Locked in a cage within Sophia’s mind, White embodies the vulnerable, creative child whose authentic expression was punished and suppressed. She often goes unheard and unseen by the other NUMINA, who find her presence uncomfortable.
We see White – the young Sophia – in her original state, a fun, story-telling kid who doesn’t want to do her maths homework, along with the kid whose natural path was denied. White’s movements alternate between fearful stillness and bursts of authentic childlike energy. Her storyline, particularly her eventual liberation from the cage, parallels Sophia’s journey toward healing and reclaiming her authentic self. Though White speaks very little (with the exception of one fun monologue), her presence should be felt throughout – a visual reminder of what’s at stake in the battle for Sophia’s future.
